Rams Dieter Poster Designs

These posters were a personal project that I attempted to improve my illustration techniques and to learn more design principles from one of the greatest. In my hunt for inspiration in the beginning stages, I came across a manuscript of one of Rams’ recent speeches. It was only four pages long, but it held insights and wisdom that directly inspired the direction I took with these pieces.

Each illustration is hand drawn in Procreate, which is a great deal out of the comfort zone that Adobe has given me in their programs and pen tool. I ran into a few bumps in the road, like the 20 layer limit and the lack of vectors being used within Procreate. Still, I had more fun than I could have envisioned, and it looks like I’ve rediscovered a love for drawing and illustration.

The designs were then exported as TIFF files and placed within Adobe InDesign. From there, I changed the canvas to a standard poster size and went through many, many, many different iterations to find the ideal way to set the typography.

After the final design was set, I export the images once again. I imported the files into DaVinci Resolve, a powerful video editing program. Working in here was less than ideal, as it was not intended to work with image files, but the node based color grading system and the extensive list of high quality plug-ins made it worth it. I utilized a few third-party plugins that are able to emulate film stock and film grain with impressive and accurate results. I chose to do this to add a little bit more character to my posters, and to give a subtle nod to the time period in which Rams originally designed these products.
