There are really only a few things that are truly essential to a healthy life. Still, we choose to pollute our lifestyles everyday with unnecessary things that only bring temporary pleasure. In the end, though, a simple lifestyle filled with only the essentials is ultimately more satisfying and healthier. The USA loves to fill our minds with the idea that all these new products and items are essential to our life. But keep in mind, none of these existed 50 years ago. A rule of thumb that I like to live by is: If your great grandmother would not buy it, or it was not available at her time, then you shouldn’t either. It’s true too. Nearly every new product or food made today is not necessary to our lives. It is nothing but a shortcut that ultimately may be harmful to us, rather than helpful.

To find the universal elements enough; to find the air and the water exhilarating; to be refreshed by a morning walk or an evening saunter... to be thrilled by the stars at night; to be elated over a bird’s nest or a wildflower in spring — these are some of the rewards of the simple life.
— John Burroughs
